Sunday 22nd October 2017

The curtain fell on the short oval racing season in Cornwall, with the final 2017 fixture at the United Downs Raceway.

Stock Rods

The fourteen car showing of Stock Rods included 209 Harrison Boyd racing at St Day for the first time, 337 Darren Waters on his debut appearance, and 68 Levi Robinson, who had travelled overnight after racing at Cowdenbeath in Scotland.  51 Luke Oliver and 151 Simon Vincent shared the front row of the Grand National Championship, with Oliver swiftly into the lead at the drop of the green flag.  That left Vincent to battle with 92 Adam Daniels for second place, and it was the south coast star who managed to get the better of that contest.  Oliver scored a comfortable win, with Daniels and Vincent filling the other trophy positions.  The guaranteed Oliver the St Day Track Championship, whilst Vincent was confirmed as the Autospeed Points Champion for 2017.  The first of the two Allcomers races saw 437 Lewis Trickey take the chequered, with Oliver the runner-up.  In the second Allcomers race – the last Stock Rod race with Autospeed this year, Daniels incurred heavy damage on the back straight.  Oliver took the win, rather fittingly, after his excellent support of the westcountry season.

Bangers

With a slight shortfall in numbers, the Last Chance race for the Bangers was dispensed with, and thus all drivers present were invited to contest the Supreme Championship.  797 Dan Moss won the coin toss with 70 Jamie Thomas, and duly gridded on pole position.  Behind them, 23 Barry Staples and Devon Champion 991 Ben Hale were on the second row.  Moss and Thomas stormed into the first bend, leaving Staples and Hale to go sideways behind them under pressure from the chasing pack.  Nonetheless, as Moss and Thomas were delayed, Hale and Staples were able to assume first and second place.  The early stages also saw 246 Ryan Sparks and Cornish Champion 621 Scott Kendall collide near the pit gate, but both continued.  When Hale collected some rear end damage, around the midway point, Staples edged ahead, but he was being pursued by Sparks, who managed to grab the lead just before a caution period.  Staples then became tangled with backmarker 304 Marty Penhaligon, and he was duly collected by 53 Chris James.  Sparks saw out the closing stages, to claim the Supreme title for a fourth time, and Thomas got the better of Kendall , as they finished second and third respectively.  After 223 Sonny Collins had led the early stages of the final, 776 Terry Senford hit the front, and he went on to win convincingly, from Thomas and Sparks.  The runner-up place for Thomas clinched the Points Championship title.  Collins marked his first St Day visit, with a win in the Allcomers race, and Thomas finished second for the third time during the afternoon – a result which put the seal on the St Day Track Championship.  A short lived DD ended the afternoon, with victory going to 768 Tyler Cock.

Ministox

Numbers were unusually low in the junior class, although 982 Cameron Holmes was present for his debut appearance.  The opening heat saw 677 Warren Darby charge to victory, and that ensured him of the St Day Track Championship.  654 Harley Soper was the runner-up, whilst third place for 980 Charlie Lobb was enough for him to clinch the Points Championship.  Heat two saw 970 Archie Farrell score his first Ministox victory.  619 Max Langmaid won the final, as he led home Darby and Lobb, and with time available, an Allcomers race was added to the schedule, which Langmaid also won.
