United Downs Raceway - Sunday 30th July 2017

Despite the threat of poor weather, it was a day of summer sunshine at the United Downs Raceway, for the Cornish Caravan Chaos event.

Saloon Stock Cars

Although numbers were low, the Saloon Stock Cars still produced a trio of watchable and intriguing races.  The entry included Ministox graduate 902 Junior Buster, who quickly found himself involved in the opening heat, when he tangled with 903 Adam Neville.  As Neville bounced towards the turn four infield, he clouted a marker tyre and shot skywards.  Out front, 447 Adam Hicks led from the off, and his lead proved far too much for those chasing, as he clinched a first ever Saloon Stock Car victory.  Hicks led heat two as well, with Junior Buster in pursuit for the first half of the race.  276 Ben King moved into second, but could not reel in Hicks, who scored his second successive win.  Further back, British Champion 158 Shane Davies narrowly got the better of 27 Kieren Bradford for third, as they enjoyed a terrific race with one another.  The final was a lively contest, as Neville got away from King, and duly made it to the front.  Davies chased and chased, and with less than two laps to go, he edged past Neville.  That was the one-two at the line, whilst Bradford completed the top three.

2 Litre Old Skool Bangers

The opening heat for the 2 Litre Old Skool Bangers saw former Saloon Stock Car World Champion 677 Eddie Darby on the grid, and he quickly made his mark, instigating a succession of heavy crashes in the pits bend.  207 Darren Bradford ran out the winner.  Heat two saw 185 Rich Coaker get the better of 452 Anthony Sleeman after they had raced together superbly in a tight contest.  Sleeman won the final, from Darren Bradford and 907 Cameron Bradford, whilst Darby found himself on the receiving end in this race; first when 912 Simon Rees spun him around, and latterly when 451 Nigel Belfield piled him into a heap of cars in the turnstile bend.

Bangers

206 Matt Brewer took the opening heat for the Bangers, from 930 Jordan Lobb and 366 Pete Warren, with 23 Barry Staples recovering well after 53 Chris James had spun him out in the early stages.  Heat two had barely begun, when Lobb thunderously followed in 768 Tyler Cock in the pits bend.  Cock needed medical attention, whilst Lobb was loaded up ahead of further disciplinary measures.  The re-run was led by 285 Charlie Mitchell, before a fabulous piece of driving by 991 Ben Hale saw him convincingly charge into a lead he was not to lose.  455 Shane Kennard led heat three for some time, but was ultimately caught by 621 Scott Kendall in the closing stages.  Further glory was to follow for Kendall as he stormed to victory in the Cornish Championship.  Kendall hit the front by halfway, and built up a big lead.  Hale got as far as second, but Kendall was a long way clear down the line.  Staples completed the top three.

Caravans

Although other caravans were available, there were eight on track for the Cornish Caravan Chaos race – more than enough to make one almighty mess, after much carnage and destruction.  690 Tristan Clement rolled over, which forced a restart.  79 Brian Edmond picked a clear path to victory, to win the Marshall Janson Trophy, whilst 944 Callum Hosie and 254 Will Blight were amongst the most entertaining, as they smashed any caravan remains they came across.

BriSCA Micro F2 Stock Cars

783 Fin Carter swept to a flawless hat-trick in the infant class, with all competitors receiving superb t-shirts from sponsors Jay Tomkins Snap On.
