On this day in 2017, Saloon Stock Car World Champion 6 Simon Welton cemented his place as the sport’s leading star when he won the National Championship at Smeatharpe.  After duelling in the early laps, Simon edged clear of fellow front row starter 349 Michael Allard and survived a thunderous last bend lunge by backmarker 26 Tommy Barnes to clinch the title.
