Gus Garrett - RIP

Autospeed were very saddened to learn of the passing on 10 April, of one of the legendary names of Banger racing in the south west and at Smeatharpe in particular, Gus Garrett.

For more years than Gus might care to remember, he raced Bangers in the westcountry, and beyond - regularly making the trip to Arena Essex especially, for the PRI World Championship.  He was hugely influential in many would-be racers taking the plunge to get out on track and 'have a go'.

When Gus retired from racing, he introduced the Easter Hop Trophy at Smeatharpe, which has been raced for annually.  It thus became a classic opportunity each Easter for Gus to arrive at his old stomping ground, to present the splendid trophy - see below for just a sprinkling of these visits from the past decade.  Still puffing away on a cigar, Gus was an unforgettable character, whose presence will be sorely missed.  Our thoughts go to his friends and family.
