United Downs Raceway - Sunday 12th September 2021

The lone fixture at the United Downs Raceway, St Day for September was full of close racing and some spectacular fun in the Ramp Rollover competition, on an afternoon that was mostly dry, with some light drizzle late on.

Ramp Rollover

Four intrepid pilots took part in the Ramp Rollover contest.  692 Dave Gardner and 690 Tristan Clement each managed a full rollover and back on to their wheels, to score 4 sides each.  233 Liam Parkin and 275 Liam Best each achieved a rollover on to their roof, duly scoring 2 sides each.  The event was warmly received, and all four drivers took a well earned lap of honour for their efforts.

With the region’s drivers having had a deluge of racing opportunities, it was little surprise that numbers dipped, and resulted in a straight races format.  Nonetheless, the racing was still intriguing.  In heat one, 35 Charlie Fisher and 895 Ben Goddard crashed out early on.  460 Adam Pearce led from the front, but he was chased down by 302 Dale Moon who nipped by in the closing stages.  Pearce led heat two until halfway and beyond, and this time Moon and Goddard were in pursuit.  27 Kieren Bradford made it up to third, and he joined the two ahead of him in an exciting brief contest.  Moon shifted Goddard, and Bradford narrowly missed potting Bradford into Moon.  However, Moon escaped and hunted down Pearce to claim a second win of the afternoon.  The pattern of Pearce leading from the start was repeated in the Living Like Outlaws sponsored final.  Pearce was still ahead in the second half of the race, but Moon found himself nudged out of second by 418 Ben Borthwick.  As Borthwick and Moon swept past Pearce, the race developed into a straight duel between them.  Borthwick looked to have edged sufficiently clear with three laps remaining, but Moon had other ideas and at the start of the last lap he bundled Borthwick wide heading into turn one.  Borthwick hit the plating and careered around the corner, where he collected the stationary 605 Richie Andrews car.  Moon saw out the lap to head home 24 Jon Palmer, Bradford and 315 Justin Fisher.  As the cars came to a halt, Borthwick strode across the infield, gallantly smiling as he shook hands with Moon in a magnificent sporting exchange.  However, further drama was to follow, when Moon’s car failed the post-race scrutineering check on rear axle alignment.  Thus, Palmer, Bradford and Fisher were each elevated one place and received their trophies from former racers Dave Brown, Kevin Stack and Martin Farrell.  Bradford completed the afternoon with victory in the Grand National.  Subsequent to his disqualification in the final, Moon cited race damage as the reason for his failure to pass the post-race checks, and duly lodged a Protest with BriSCA F2.

Ministox

The ever-changing complexion of Ministox was evident once again, with Harry Darby and Harrison Stone having recently hit the upper age limit.  Even with those two having departed the scene, there were still nineteen drivers present.  Heat one began with a rollover for 919 Oscar Berry.  When the race resumed, 984 Fin Carter and 202 Cody Bradford contested the lead.  290 Alfie Tomkins came to join them, but it was Bradford who took the chequered.  Carter looked set to win heat two, until a late race intervention by backmarker 870 Bert Farrell.  That left the door open for 055 Olivia Herzig to score a maiden win, ahead of Tomkins and 382 Corey Hunt.  Tomkins and Bradford shared the front row for the Cornish Championship, by which time the light drizzle had left the track damp and slippery.  Tomkins led from the start, but Bradford soon edged ahead, and once in the lead, he continued to extend his advantage.  Bradford was a convincing winner, with Tomkins a distant second and Carter rounded out the top three.

Back 2 Basics Bangers

Slightly surprisingly, numbers in the Back 2 Basics Bangers were very modest.  617 Reece Rixon and 189 Ry Beardwell clashed at the start of heat one, which then had a variety of different leaders at the front.  Eventually, 233 Liam Parkin edged clear to win.  At the start of heat two, 344 Mike Whitelock bundled 196 Phil Chapman into 22 Dylan Rowley-Brown, and the latter spun.  Whitelock hit the front, but 102 Tom Sandercock sent him wide in turn one, which opened the door for Chapman to complete an emphatic win. The final went the way of 690 Tristan Clement, ahead of Parkin, Sandercock and Whitelock, and the day ended with Whitelock taking the honours in an entertaining Destruction Derby.
