Smeatharpe Stadium - Sunday 4th August 2019

Despite the threat of rain, the majority of the latest fixture at Smeatharpe was held in dry conditions.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars

A number of local drivers were unavailable, either through holidays, other engagements or suspension from racing, but the annual Remembering Rog #95 day still attracted a car count of 32 which was sufficient for a full format meeting.  Amongst the entry, 32 Chris Gates made his F2 debut, at the wheel of the John Harding’s Motorworld hire car.  Heat one looked to be heading to 835 Matt Westaway.  Downgraded to white, the Cornish racer looked in full control, only to spin at the start of the last lap.  That opened the door for 689 Joe Marquand to pounce.  There were unacceptable scenes at the end of the race.  Even though red flags had been deployed, 539 Steve Hartnett sped around the track to remonstrate with 667 Tommy Farrell for an earlier incident.  The two came to a halt on the exit of turn four, whereupon the drivers ended up brawling before being separated.  Disciplinary consequences are inevitable.  An untidy start by the blue grade saw 302 Dale Moon spun around at the start of heat two.  227 Stuart Whitemore led, but he spun unaided, which left 828 Julian Coombes out front.  In turn, he was delayed when 636 David North spun, and was collected by 118 Josh Toll.  468 Sam Weston wrestled the lead from Coombes and went on to win whilst British Champion torpedoed Coombes on the last bend, which saw Coombes spin, and drop from second to ninth.  There was a brief spell in the lead in the consolation for Whitemore and for 760 Trevor Dube, but each spun away their advantage.  Coombes again got to the front, and he went on to win comfortably from 126 Jamie Avery, who came out on top of a battle with 418 Ben Borthwick for second.  The final began with absolute mayhem in the pits bend, and that certainly benefitted the lower graders.  Out front, 134 Cameron McColm and Westaway set the pace.  Westaway went on to relieve the teenager of the lead, and he was still clear with five laps to go.  Marquand continued to close, and got up to second place, but he ran out of laps to mount a challenge on Westaway.  Thus, there was a Cornish one-two for the Remembering Rog #95 trophy final, with McColm in third.  Westaway duly rid himself of his white roof in the first meeting since his downgrading.  There was an early yellow flag in the Grand National, with 315 Justin Fisher stranded in the west bend.  McColm and Marquand duelled for the lead, but it was Marquand who stormed home for his second win of the afternoon.

Saloon Stock Cars

Just a fortnight before the World Championship will be contested in Scotland, there were sixteen drivers in action, including 424 Patrick Rutters from the Netherlands.  Regrettably, Stock Rod driver Ross Montgomery was thwarted from making his Saloon Stock Car debut, when the borrowed Adam Hicks car fell foul of mechanical issues.  130 Chris Durrant led off the Devon Championship, whilst 799 Joe Powell eased free of 210 Paul Barnes to lead the chase of the lone white grader.  Powell duly hit the front and he went on to extend his advantage considerably.  Further back, returnee 161 Billy Smith was a real livewire addition to the grid, but there was to be no denying Powell, as he swept home for an emphatic victory, with Barnes the runner-up and 56 Georgie Boult Jnr in third.  The first Allcomers race saw Powell get to the front swiftly, whilst there was plenty going on further down the order.  Cars were trading paint and swapping places repeatedly, but Powell was again uncatchable out front.  Early in the second Allcomers, Barnes dived at Powell, which stopped him getting away, and after making a good start from the blue grade, Smith edged his way into the lead, and from there he was never troubled.  Powell gave chase, but could not get within striking distance of the East Anglian.

2 Litre National Bangers

There is no escaping the dismal state of National Bangers currently, with another pitiful showing of just seven drivers for this year’s Westcountry Wreckfest.  A number of drivers who had booked failed to show, and it was hard going for the drivers who did appear to serve up much entertainment.  Nonetheless, praise should be given to those seven drivers – it was not their fault that the National Bangers were so ordinary – that fault lay squarely with those drivers who did not race.  Needless to say the wrecking was a long way off the agenda, with action very much at a premium.  133 Terry Hill successfully defended the Wreckfest title, as he led home former winners 162 Brett Ellacott and 452 Anthony Sleeman.  Hill ran 99 David Spooner around the wall in the first Allcomers race which was won by Ellacott.  The second Allcomers event went the way of 74 Adam Hitchcock and there were no takers for the end of meeting Destruction Derby.
