United Downs Raceway - Sunday 3rd July 2016

A day of ever improving weather eventually saw bright sunshine for the World Championship qualifying round for BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, for a meeting which also included 2 Litre Old Skool Bangers, Stock Rods and the BriSCA Heritage Juniors.  Construction work on the safety fence upgrade on the home straight, had left that section of the circuit muddy, and it took a few practice dusty sessions to get the track surface to improve.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars

There was a most disappointing entry for the F2 World qualifier, with a very low showing from westcountry drivers in particular.  Accordingly, numbers dictated the need for a two from three format.  First to make his mark for the day was 575 Tom Clark, who swept to victory in heat one.  In the second heat, 464 Matt Linfield took his brand new car to a win in its first meeting.  There was a win for 542 Steven Gilbert in heat two.  A good showing of 23 cars assembled for the fourteenth running of the Neil Truran Motorsport sponsored World qualifying round final, with 750 Lewis Holden swiftly into a good lead.  A tangle further back saw 578 Mark Gibbs taken sideways into turn three, and that triggered a four-car pile-up and race suspension.  Holden was still the leader, but Tom Clark was now beginning to make good progress.  Star graders Gilbert, 522 Chris Mikulla, 24 Jon Palmer and 676 Neil Hooper indulged in an exciting battle behind, all of which aided Clark’s getaway.  Clark won, Mikulla took second and Holden crossed the line in third.  However, he failed post-race scrutineering, and Palmer inherited third place, with Hooper elevated to fourth.  The Grand National was a fitting finale to the day, but again brought more disappointment for the luckless Holden.  Once more he built a healthy advantage at the front, but in the closing stages, he encountered a group of tangling backmarkers.  They hindered his run, and he was snagged by them, which ended all of their races in one hit.  Out came the yellow flags, and when 663 Bryan Lindsay retired to the infield, Palmer was left as the race leader.  He edged a very slow rolling lap, before getting the jump on Hooper, as the two stars finished first and second respectively.

2 Litre Old Skool Bangers

A reasonable showing of 2 Litre Old Skool Bangers led to some lively action.  372 Jay Matthews was a convincing winner of the first heat, and 74 Adam Hitchcock took top honours in heat two, despite a late attack from backmarker 861 Jean-Marc Penaluna.  By the time of the final, 246 Ryan Sparks had his new BMW finding some speed at last, and he charged to victory, ahead of 133 Terry Hill and 383 Bradley Hutchings.  Hill then won the truncated Allcomers race, which was then halted, ahead of a Destruction Derby to finish the day.  This proved popular with drivers and spectators, and saw a dead heat, when 714 Paul Smaldon and 492 Josh Hutchings met head-on, and silenced one another’s cars there and then.

Stock Rods

New life and impetus was injected into the Stock Rod season, with the appearance of two drivers – 203 Andrew Russell and 208 David Simpson – each making their debut, and a first appearance of the year from 740 Nigel Stuart.  All told, the entry of 16 cars equalled the best so far in 2016 in the westcountry.   It was Russell and Simpson who set a good pace at the front in the opening race, and only 54 John Tait managed to track them down.  In the final, however, the two newcomers proved uncatchable, as Simpson led home Russell, with Tait completing the top three.  A damaging three-way crash in the Grand National saw 3 Matt Peters, 40 Rick Cornell and 9 Chris Drake collide heavily on the back straight.  Shortly after that incident, 26 Alan Furse also clobbered the back straight fence.  437 Lewis Trickey swept home to take the chequered with 944 Callum Hosie in second, as he extended his lead in the Points Championship.

BriSCA Heritage Juniors

There were smiles and laughs galore from the BriSCA Heritage Juniors, who came with a clear intention to enjoy themselves.  739 Darren Burkitt took the opening race, which was a fairly gentle introduction to the afternoon.  The second heat saw the competition cranked up a little, but up at the front, 59 Nigel Finnigan kept out of range of the rest, as he scored a St Day race win for the first time.  Right from the outset in the Kat Kabin Cornish Open Championship, 107 Dan Chiplen looked fiercely determined, as he pushed and shoved his way to the front.  There was a race suspension when 342 Ross Taylor lost a wheel, and in the ensuing chaos, 261 Jason Lamburn bundled himself up one of the infield marker tyres entering turn one.  When the race resumed, Chiplen stormed to victory, in the very car that Graham Bunter had won with in the corresponding race ten years ago.  128 Jack Bunter finished as runner-up, and in a blanket finish for third, 253 Alan Humphrey just got there by a slim margin.
